The LifeProof fre rugged Apple iPad tablet case is a great option for education buyers.  Rugged, waterproof and dustproof, the fre iPad case is also student proof making it one of the toughest cases on the market for the education market.

Protection
Featuring the most complete protection of any case on the market, the LifeProof fre case can handle almost anything a student throws at it including drops, spills and outdoor use.  The IP-68 rating and MIL-STD-810 ratings mean the case should survive a drop on a hard surface or into a puddle of water.  The built in screen protection means the screen is scratch proof and protected from the youngest students use of crayons versus a stylus.  With the optional cover stand available for the iPad Air, screen protection is as good as any case on the market.

Stand
The primary weakness for school use is the lack of a stand.  The LifeProof fre does not have any built in stand but does fit well in many aftermarket stands.  The optional cover stand for the iPad Air does solve the stand issue but does add to the cost of an already higher priced case.

Accessory Compatibility
The LifeProof fre cases fit in the most popular charging carts but the port opening only fits Apple OEM charging cables.  Because only Apple OEM charging cables fit, secure wired keyboard connectors do not fit.

Convenience
The LifeProof fre case has a clear back allowing asset tags to be attached to the device versus the case.  The case fits in most charging carts but the small port opening requiring only Apple OEM connectors can be a challenge.

The LifeProof fre case may not be the best case for general student use but is a must for specialty uses.  iPads used for field trips, sporting events, chemistry class, wood shop class, metal class, food class or other environments where moisture, liquids or dust are common can benefit from the use of the LifeProof fre case.

Protection
With full tablet protection (when ordered with the included screen protector), the case can handle tough students, being thrown in a backpack, and everyday usage.  The case is MIL-STD-810 rated to handle at least a 6 foot drop.  The outer case is hard plastic with an inner frame core that cushions the device.  A built in screen protector is optional and simple to replace if damage does occur.  A folio cover is also available in multiple colors for added screen protection and/or use as a stand.  The Otterbox UnlimitED provides full protection with only the LIfeproof fre case providing more with its IP68 waterproof rating.

Stand
The UnlimitED uses a built in stand on the back of the case that works somewhat like a high quality snap bracelet.  The stand is attached to the back of the case and sits flat when not needed.  To use, the ends of the stand curve out and the tablet can be leaned against the curves.  The system is simple, easy to use and does a good job propping up the tablet.  Stands can be easily replaced and come in multiple colors.  The stand can be used in typing mode or viewing mode but angles cannot be adjusted.

Accessory Compatibility
The UnlimitED is compatible with common charging carts and fits within the slots.  The port opening for chargers and keyboards will work with non OEM connectors.  The case works well with the popular Belkin wired keyboard with built in stand.  We did not find any popular education accessories the UnlimitED case did not work with or fit well with.

Convenience
The clear back on the UnlimitED case makes asset tag access simple.  The asset tag can be attached to the device versus the case providing added security and tag protection.  The cases are scratch and scuff resistant and the grey outer shell maintains a clean look.  If the case does get dirty, the outer shell can be easily wiped down and is stain resistant.

Otterbox designers have been designing rugged cases for years.  The UnlimitED case is a great example of their ability to design a top quality case.  While the UnlimitED may be a little more expensive than other options, the reduced breakage of devices protected by these cases will likely result in the cases paying for themselves.
