The Urban Armor Gear iPhone 4/4s case offers quality drop protection without adding unnecessary bulk.  Similar to other cases like the OtterBox Defender or the Ballistic Tough Jacket, the Urban Armor Gear iPhone 4/4s Case features an inner flexible shock-absorbing silicon layer and an outer rigid polycarbonate layer.  However, unlike OtterBox and Ballistic models, the two layers on the Urban Armor Gear case are permanently fused together.

The inner silicon lining of the case features a hexagonal pattern that creates little air pockets to protect the iPhone from shock, impact, and other force damage.

On the outside of the case, each of the four corners has additional silicon that act as bumpers.  Also, the hard polycarbonate outer layer features a shock-absorbing design that adds to the case’s overall protection.

The Urban Armor Gear iPhone 4/4s case allows access to all of the iPhone’s speakers, cameras, ports, and buttons.  The touch screen is also fully accessible and uninhibited by side bumpers that often make it difficult to swipe on the screen from the sides and corners.

Installation is also very easy.  Because the whole case is one solid piece, simply slide in the phone and it’s ready to go.

Conclusion

The Urban Armor Gear iPhone 4/4s case is a great option if you are looking for a solid, one-piece case that provides a high level of drop protection without adding any unnecessary bulk or weight to your phone.

Recommendation: The Incipio Stowaway iPhone Credit Card Case is a good option if you are looking for light-weight drop protection and a kick stand.  However, the credit card compartment does not close securely enough for me to feel comfortable using the case as a wallet replacement.

Incipio Stowaway iPhone Credit Card Case Review

At first glance the Incipio Stowaway iPhone Credit Card Case reminded me of the OtterBox Defender.  The Incipio Stowaway and the OtterBox Defender share the same size dimensions and both offer dual-layer drop protection.  However, that is where the similarities end.

The Incipio Stowaway for iPhone 4s offers full access to all of the phone’s speakers, cameras, ports, and buttons.  The thick bumper around the home button is a little bit awkward, but apart from that all of the other buttons and features of the phone are fully accessible.

The outer layer of the Incipio Stowaway is made out of a rigid polycarbonate shell that feels rubberized to the touch.  This outer layer does a good job protecting the iPhone from smudges, scratches, and other external damage.  While this outer layer is smooth, the rubberized texture gives the case a good grip as well.

The inner layer of the Incipio Stowaway is made out of flexible, shock-absorbing silicon.  This silicon layer both absorbs shock and impact in addition to protecting the back and the sides of the iPhone from scratches.

An adhesive screen protector is also included.

The back of the case opens to reveal two grooves that can hold up to three credit cards and a single bill of cash.  However, due the case’s design, if less than three credit cards are stored then the cards do not fit snugly and fall out very easily.

The access door to the credit card holder on the back of the case opens very easily.  This is good for ease of access but is bad for security.  While it’s nice to be able to open the case with one hand, I did not feel comfortable carrying my credit cards because I was afraid that the case would open and that the cards would fall out.

However, the door on the back of the Incipio Stowaway does act as a convenient kickstand.

Second, the front of the case features an integrated screen-protector to guard against scratches, smudges, and other damage.

Third, a hard, polycarbonate layer adds structural support and additional shock protection.  Then, a soft yet durable shock-absorbing silicon layer encloses the entire case except for the screen.  Together, the soft silicon and hard polycarbonate layers provide significant drop and shock protection, protecting the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 from drops several feet high.

To add even more protection, the Galaxy Tab 7 OtterBox Defender Case comes with a removable hard-plastic screen protector that doubles as a viewing stand.  When placed over the screen, this additional layer protects against scratches, and even puncture damage from sharp objects.

When removed and used as a viewing stand, the tablet can be placed in either a vertical or horizontal viewing orientation.

However, although the Galaxy Tab 7 OtterBox Defender case does provide very high quality drop protection, the case is heavy, bulky, and difficult to install. Also, the viewing stand is very stiff and requires a lot of force to open and set up.

Conclusion

If extra bulk and weight are not an issue, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 OtterBox Defender Case is an excellent choice to protect your tablet from drops, scratches, and just about any other hazard that could cause damage.  The only thing that the OtterBox Defender does not protect against is water.

When I first picked up the Seidio Active for iPhone 5s the first thing I noticed was how light it was compared to other multi-layer rugged holsters.  The heaviest part of the case was the tiny metal kickstand.

The Seidio Active for iPhone 5s also feels softer than many other rugged cases.  Instead of a hard polycarbonate shell, the Seidio Active combines a shock-absorbing flexible silicon liner with a flexible exterior skeleton.  While I am not sure which material does a better job protecting the phone from falls, the flexible exterior seems like it would absorb more shock.  The outside of the case also improves grip by offering finger grooves along the sides.

A feature unique to the Seidio Active for iPhone 5s is the integrated fold-out aluminum kickstand located on the back of the case.  The kickstand allows the phone to be placed on a desk and viewed hands-free.  If you’re like me and like to read the news or watch videos while eating, this feature adds a lot of value to your phone.

The Seidio Active also features a convenient carrying holster.

The Seidio Active for iPhone 5s also maintains a very slim profile and easily slips into a purse or pocket.

However, if you prefer to carry your phone on your belt, the Seidio Active for iPhone 5s also comes with a convenient carrying holster.  The holster can be adjusted into 7 unique positions and has a 2inch wide belt clip.  Also, a spring-loaded lever is included on the top of the holsetr to make sure that your phone stays secure.

The main downside to the Seidio Active for iPhone 5s is the fact that the velvet lining on the inside of the belt holster and the silicon shock absorbing layer of the case are dust magnets.  Both of these components attract dust, dirt, and lint and are difficult to effectively keep clean.

Also, the case does not include a screen protector and offers no protection against water damage.

Conclusion

The Seidio Active for iPhone 5s provides quality drop protection and a convenient viewing stand while maintaining a low weight and profile.

The Ballistic Hard Core Case for iPhone provides unparalleled drop and shock protection.  First, a Ballistic shock absorbent polymer layer cradles the phone.  Then, a tough, impact-resistant polycarbonate layer adds structural support.  After that, an additional layer of Ballistic shock absorbent polymer wraps around the whole phone except for the screen.  Last, a removable outer layer of silicon with plugs for all ports adds even more drop protection.

The Ballistic Hard Core Case offers more than 4 layers of protection.

In fact, the Ballistic Hard Core Case for iPhone has so many protective layers that it actually bounces when dropped onto a hard surface.

However, because the phone Ballistic Hard Core Case has so many layers of protection, I was a little disappointed to find out that the case is not waterproof.  In fact, if a little bit of water drips behind the case onto the phone, all of the layers make it difficult to quickly get to the phone and dry it off.

I also was not a big fan of the built-in screen protector.  While the protector does guard against scratches and allows for full usage of the iPhone’s touchscreen features, it distorts the image and reduces the screen’s overall resolution.

The Ballistic Hard Core Case offers full access to all of the iPhone’s buttons, cameras, speakers, and ports.

Apart from decreased screen resolution, the Ballistic Hard Core Case for iPhone offers excellent accessibility to all the various buttons, cameras, speakers, and ports of the iPhone.  Despite several layers of protective silicon and polycarbonate, all of the buttons are easily pushed down.  Also, the Ballistic Hard Core Case for iPhone has unique mesh speaker covers that allow sound to pass through but not dirt or dust.

Overall, the Ballistic Hard Core Case for iPhone has an industrial feel to it.  The case is heavy (almost as heavy as the iPhone 4s itself) and bulky.  However, this is expected considering the high amounts of drop protection and is accomodated for by a durable belt clip.

The belt clip securely holds the Ballistic Hard Core Case for iPhone and doubles as yet another layer of drop protection.  The belt clip also features a secure spring mechanism to stay closed and can swivel a full 360 degrees.  One of the downside of the belt clip however is its size.  The clip is just barely to big to be comfortably worn on a normal belt and barely too small to be carried on a police duty belt or construction work belt.

Conclusion

The Ballistic Hard Core Case provides some of the best drop protection in the industry.  With more than 4 layers of quality protection, an iPhone equipped with a Ballistic Hard Core Case can easily sustain a fall from up to 12 feet high.  However, quality drop protection comes with higher purchasing cost and increased bulk to the case.

Like all LifeProof products, the LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip is excellently engineered and very well constructed.  The belt clip offers full access to all of the iPhone 5′s various speakers, buttons, and ports, allowing comfortable use of the iPhone 5 while installed.

One of the first things I noticed about the LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip was how light it is.  At less than 2 ounces, the case does not weigh down my belt or greatly increase the weight of my phone.

Slide the switch to green to release the phone, and slide the switch to red to lock the phone.

Ease of access is also very good.  With one hand I can quickly and easily place or remove the iPhone 5 from the clip.  Also, the LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip features a secure locking switch on the top to keep the phone from falling out.  To use the switch, simply slide it to red to lock the phone or slide it to green to release it.

 

The LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip comes with 2 size belt clips: 1.5″ and 2.”

The LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip has two different belt size options.  The holster can be used with either a standard 1.5 inch thick belt or with a thicker 2 inch duty belt.  However, once you choose a size and attach the appropriate belt clip, the clip cannot be removed and exchanged for another size.

The 1.5 inch clip will fit most common belts, while the 2 inch belt fits most police, military, and construction work belts.  Also, both sizes of the LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip can rotate a full 360 degrees once installed.

The only downside of the LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip is its cost.  When many other products like the OtterBox Defender include plastic belt clips for free, the $29.95 price tag of the LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip is a little steep.  Combined with the already high $79.95 price of the LifeProof Fre, in total it costs more than $100 just for a case and for a holster.

Conclusion

For those who don’t mind the high price tag, the LifeProof iPhone 5 Belt Clip is a great accessory.  The clip offers full access and increased portability to the iPhone 5 without adding unnecessary weight or bulk.

The LifeProof Fre iPhone 5s Case effectively protects against water damage.

The LifeProof Fre iPhone 5s provides unparalleled water-proofing protection.  In fact, I first saw the Lifeproof Fre iPhone 5s while scuba diving.  One of the divers had a LifeProof Fre installed on his iPhone 5s and was using it to take photos of the diving class.

The LifeProof Fre totally seals the iPhone 5, allowing the phone to be fully immersed in water up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) deep without sustaining any damage.

Also, because the phone is completely enclosed, the LifeProof Fre also protects against dust or debris.

The LifeProof Fre iPhone 5s case has good but not fantastic drop and shock protection.  While the LifeProof Fre meets military drop test specifications up to 6 feet high, the case will not sustain drops from much higher and will not survive frequent drops.

Functionality

The LifeProof Fre iPhone 5s case allows access to all of the iPhone 5s’ cameras, buttons, speakers, and ports, even while the phone is underwater.  Although all of the buttons and cameras are fully enclosed, special glare-resistant plastic allows full function of the cameras and external plastic buttons on the case correspond with the buttons on the iPhone 5s.

Perhaps the most striking feature however is the special membrane over the fingerprint sensor that is tough enough to keep out water but sensitive enough to read fingerprints.

Also, one of the features that makes LifeProof cases unique is the waterproof headphone jack adapter.  The adapter securely seals with the rest of the case while providing access to the port, allowing use underwater.

The LG Flex OtterBox Defender case offers durable protection to the LG Flex without taking away from any of the phone’s features.  The LG Flex OtterBox Defender features 3 layers of protection with an optional 4th layer when using the belt clip.

First, the LG Flex is protected on the back by a soft layer of micro-fiber foam and on the front by a durable clear plastic screen-protecting membrane.  Then, a durable yet flexible hard-plastic case adds additional structural support to the entire phone.  Last, a hard rubber case coats around the entire phone (except for the screen) and acts as a shock absorbing layer.

The OtterBox Defender can flex right along with the LG Flex, even with several protective layers.

However, perhaps the most striking feature is the fact that the LG Flex OtterBox Defender can still bend and flex with the LG Flex despite having 3 protective layers.

Also, while the LG Flex OtterBox Defender offers access to all of the various ports, cameras, and buttons of the LG Flex, the case includes special doors and flaps to protect any ports or openings from dust and debris.

Con’s

Not so much the fault of the case as it is of the phone, the LG Flex OtterBox Defender is very large and not very comfortable to wear on a belt, despite the included belt clip.  Also, the phone case is difficult to take out from the belt clip once installed.

The OtterBox Defender for LG Flex has 8 secure points that need to be opened in order to install/uninstall the phone.

While a secure fit inside the case is desirable, installing the LG Flex into the OtterBox Defender is a little bit difficult and takes more than a full minute.  This is more of a drawback because the LG Flex OtterBox Defender is not waterproof.  If water manages to get into the case, it takes a while to remove the phone so that it can be dried before causing damage.

Lastly, the unique curve of the phone and therefore of the case make the viewing stand feature of the LG Flex OtterBox Defender’s belt clip impossible to use.

Conclusion

The LG Flex OtterBox Defender offers more thorough and comprehensive protection than any other  LG Flex rugged phone case on the market.  However, due to the LG Flex’s large size (really more of a table than a phone), the case is uncomfortable to carry using the included belt clip.

However, while both cases have dual-layer drop protection and come standard with a hard plastic belt clip, each case has its own unique design.  For example, the Stanley Foreman loads vertically into its plastic holster while the OtterBox Defender loads horizontally.  Also, the belt clip on the Stanley Foreman is a little bit bigger while the belt clip on the OtterBox Defender is a little bit stronger.

The Stanley Foreman features two layers of protection.  First, a flexible silicon layer fits around the phone to absorb shock while a second hard plastic layer adds structural support and durability.

The hard plastic belt clip offers some protection as well.  And, although the Stanley Foreman’s belt clip cannot be used as a viewing stand, it can swivel 360 degrees.

The case is also very lightweight and features a textured grip strip on the back.

Lastly, the Stanley Foreman case is compatible with both the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5s, a useful characteristic if purchasing in bulk for a variety of different devices in an organization.

Con’s

The biggest downside to the Stanley Foreman is the lack of an integrated screen protector.  While the Stanley Foreman does come with an adhesive screen protector, dust can get beneath the edges of the case and damage the iPhone.

Also, the Stanley Foreman relies on friction to stay inside the holster.  While effective right out of the box, this method will not work over time as the rubber case wears down and no longer maintains a solid grip on the plastic holster.  This is especially an issue when the belt clip is in the horizontal carrying position.

Although the Stanley Foreman has a built-in grip strip on the back, the sides of case are slippery and the texture of the back of the case collects dirt and dust.

Lastly, the inside of the case features an additional padded layer of protection to guard the back of the iPhone from scratches and other potential damage.

Con’s

The main downside of the OtterBox Defender is that the case adds a little bit more bulk than the Stanley Foreman.

Also, the OtterBox Defender case for iPhone 5 cannot also be used for the 5s.  However, OtterBox does offer a Defender model for the iPhone 5s that can be purchased here.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Together, these three levels provide durable protection against a variety of different hazards to make sure that your phone stays safe, regardless of the situation.

Belkin Executive Folio for iPad Air Review

The Belkin Executive Folio is an excellent accessory for use in the office. The elastic hand strap makes it easy to hold your iPad Air while working online or presenting to clients.  The built-in business card and stylus holders are also nice features that add to the productivity and utility of the case.

Protection

The Executive Folio offers basic drop, scratch, and screen protection when closed but that’s about it.

The case is lined with soft micro-fiber to protect the iPad Air from scratches, both on the screen and on the body of the tablet.

However, one of the downsides of the Belkin Executive Folio is the fact that the case does not offer any screen protection when open.  To address this issue, I recommend pairing the Belkin executive Folio with a good adhesive screen protector.

Also, the Belkin Executive Folio does not protect against dust or water damage regardless if the case is open or closed.

Functionality

The Belkin Executive Folio includes several features to enhance the functionality of the iPad Air.

First, the Belkin Executive Folio has holes and access to all of the various ports, cameras, and buttons on the iPad Air.  Also, the case features a special elastic hand strap for convenient carrying and one-handed tablet use.  To increase convenience even more, the case features two business card pockets right next to the hand strap on the inside of the case.

In addition to working as a portfolio, the Belkin Executive Folio doubles as a viewing stand.  Once opened the case can be positioned in four distinct viewing angles.  Two rubber stoppers on the bottom of the tablet cradle ensure that the iPad stays in place while positioned in each angle.

Lastly, a series of magnets work to both keep the case securely closed while in transit and to “wake up” the iPad Air when opened.

Installation is very easy.  Simply snap the iPad Air into the tablet cradle inside the case and you are ready to go.

Conclusion

The Belkin Executive Folio offers a professional look and increased functionality that are great for use in the office. However, if you are looking for more thorough protection, I recommend investing in either an OtterBox or LifeProof case.
